On The Right Track for Success

A former student of the Rail Track Maintenance course by Lancashire Adult Learning at is celebrating as he prepares to step into his new role as a Supervisor.

James Charlton, who was working in the fitness industry, has rapidly progressed to a supervisory role, highlighting the value of vocational training and personal determination.

The Level 2 Railway Engineering qualification at Accrington and Rossendale College (ARC), gave James the foundational skills needed to enter the industry.

Taking a Leap

After the COVID-19 pandemic impacted his work in fitness, a timely social media advert prompted him to apply for the course. James says:

“I’ve always had an eye on railway work.

“I knew a few people in the industry, and it always appealed to me. I didn’t think I’d get in, but I applied anyway to see what would happen.”

The comprehensive programme involves theory, practical training and Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification. James demonstrated initiative by also completing a CSCS card course, which secured him his first labouring roles on site.

James says the way to make the most of your career is to get out there and get working.

“If you’re motivated, you have to make it work for you.

“I was lucky to have a friend in the industry who got me my first shift on a site renewal. From there, I started networking.”

His hard work led to regular shifts and valuable experience in renewals, drainage and general maintenance. This dedication culminated in earning his Controller of Site Safety (COSS) ticket, a significant career milestone.

Pushing Forward

James’s progression continued as he joined Aaron Rail, eventually becoming a Crane Controller, one of the most valued safety roles on-site. Most recently, he’s been working as a Track Charge Hand, responsible for leading a team of 13.

“A lot of progression comes from the relationships you build on-site. I’ve always given 100% and looked for solutions rather than complaints.

“I feel I’ve worked hard to be where I am.”

James’s journey exemplifies the opportunities that the Rail Track Maintenance course at ARC can provide. For individuals seeking a hands-on career with clear progression pathways, the course offers the essential qualifications and industry connections to build a successful future in railway engineering.
