It is important that all learners complete a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire in advance of the course wherever possible, so the teachers are aware of any pre-existing health conditions and appropriate course adaptions can be recommended where necessary. Following completion of this questionnaire and in order to carry out exercise safely, individuals with certain pre-existing health conditions may be required to seek medical advice before completing the course. The teacher will advise individuals on this where necessary.
In order to attend the course, learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Entry Level 3 and above. Learners will also need a basic level of IT skills to be able to access the course and follow online instructions. If training or support is needed, please enquire about our free ICT courses.
Learners will need access to a computer, laptop or tablet device with access to the internet.
All devices should have a camera, sound and a microphone so they are able to interact with their teacher and peers during the course.
The course will be delivered online using Zoom or Microsoft Teams and learners will be sent the join details and links prior to the course. Both of these online platforms can be accessed via an app on a smart phone, tablet or iPad or alternatively via the relevant website: https://www.zoom.us or https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/microsoft-teams/group-chat-software

Course Overview
This course has been designed as a progression from Introduction to Chair Based Exercise & Falls prevention and will introduce a group exercise programme that is suitable for all levels of fitness, with exercises that can be adapted to cater for individual needs. The exercises will be chair based and are aimed at developing posture, balance, strength and mobility. The course will help develop the confidence of learners when performing their daily activities and recreational tasks. Written tasks that complement the exercise programme will be completed throughout the course to support learners to develop greater personal independence and evidence learning.
What will I learn?
At the end of the course, learners will be able to:
Review the key Health and Safety issues related to safe and effective practice of chair based exercises and complete the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q)
Follow simple step-by-step instructions to improve mobility, strength, endurance, balance, posture and flexibility safely and effectively
Describe and experience the benefits of chair based exercise over a period of time
State at least 3 risk factors that lead to falls and promote greater personal independence in line with falls prevention
List opportunities to connect with others within your community to reduce social isolation
Research various activities on the internet to share and practice at home
Summarise the impact this course has had on you and outline next steps
How is the course delivered?
The teacher will use a range of activities to review learner’s knowledge throughout the course and identify any gaps and additional information required
Learners will receive feedback in order to further develop their knowledge
Learners will assess their knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the learning outcomes. This allows you to identify how much you have learnt and where you might need to do further study or research.
Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on personal goals and aspirations.
Learners will be completeing a workbook and there may be digital resources available for sharing learner discussions and ideas
How will my learning be assessed?
Learning will take place face to face at the agreed venue.
Additional Information
Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear to enable you to participate in the practical activities. Also make sure you have adequate space to exercise and an exercise mat or equivalent (such as a towel). A resistance band is preferable or an alternative if not (a pair of tights, a towel etc.). Have some water nearby to ensure you stay hydrated.
Learners may want to make notes on paper or a notepad, but learning resources will be available on Moodle.
So the course can start on time, it’s important to be ready to join your online course 15 minutes prior to the official start time.
