Entry Requirements:
To fully participate in this course, learners should be working at Entry Level 3 in English (reading, writing and speaking). Learners with ESOL at Entry Level 3 will need to have strong speaking, listening and reading skills to access course content and complete written tasks independently. For online courses, learners must also have basic digital skills, including the ability to log into Microsoft Teams, access online learning materials and complete assessments using online platforms such as Microsoft Forms.

Course Overview
This course is designed for adult learners interested in working with children and young people across early years settings, schools and colleges. It provides a strong introduction to the education and childcare sectors, helping learners understand the differences, expectations and career opportunities within each area. Learners will develop sector awareness and be supported to choose the most appropriate pathway. On successful completion, learners will achieve an Open Awards Entry Level 3 Award in Child Care (RQF). This is an introductory qualification designed to support progression into further learning and training and does not qualify learners to work independently in regulated roles
What will I learn?
Learners will develop knowledge and understanding aligned to the qualification units, including: – Exploring opportunities in childcare and education settings (mandatory unit) – Supporting children’s development, including routines, play and communication – The importance of listening to children and supporting their language development – Working with others in children’s and young people’s settings – Understanding growth, development and the needs of children – Developing sector awareness to compare Early Years and Education pathways Learners will also build confidence in identifying their own strengths and selecting an appropriate career pathway.
How is the course delivered?
The course runs over 5 weeks with 1 session per week. Delivery may take place online via Microsoft Teams or face-to-face in a community venue. Sessions include group discussions, practical activities and individual tasks. A Welcome session introduces the programme and supports learners in exploring pathways. Tutors provide ongoing support and guidance throughout.
How will my learning be assessed?
Learners will build a portfolio of evidence to meet the assessment criteria of the qualification. Assessment may include written assignments, professional discussions, presentations and reflective activities. Evidence is gathered both in sessions and via online systems, such as Microsoft Forms. The portfolio is internally assessed by the provider and externally quality assured by Open Awards.
Additional Information
Support is available from the Additional Learning Support Team. Learners are encouraged to speak to their tutor if they require additional help with English, study skills or digital skills. Regular attendance is important to successfully complete the course.
Potential Careers
This course is designed as a starting point for those considering a career in early years or education. It supports progression into further training, volunteering or entry-level experience. It does not qualify learners to take up practitioner roles independently. Learners will typically need to complete further qualifications before applying for roles such as Early Years Practitioner or Teaching Assistant.
Course Facilities
For online learning, learners will need a laptop or PC, internet access and basic digital skills. For classroom delivery, resources including workbooks and learning materials will be provided
