Entry Requirements:
To attend the course, learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Entry Level 2 and above. Courses require a minimum of 5 learners and a maximum of 12 to run. To engage fully, learners need to be able to kneel on the floor and participate in physical activities linked to learning appropriate CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation.)

Course Overview
This course has been designed as a progression from Basic First Aid for SOL and will give learners additional skills, knowledge and confidence to take appropriate action in a first aid situation, potentially saving lives or minimising serious injuries. Further development of communication and English language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening will be embedded throughout the course.
What will I learn?
At the end of the course, learners will be able to:
1. Describe and demonstrate how to treat choking 2. Discuss essential items that may be found in a first aid box 3. Identify and respond to minor injuries: bruises, splinters, nosebleeds, bites, stings 4. List 3 different types of bleeding and demonstrate the treatment for bleeding 5. Explain how to assess the severity of a burn and the treatment required 6. Discuss when, why and how to place someone in the recovery position 7. Identify further learning opportunities
How is the course delivered?
The sessions will be delivered face to face at one of our community venues and learners will be supported to work through the course content. During the session they will be learning in a variety of ways: · Meeting other learners and teacher · Sharing what has been learnt on the course · Question and answering techniques · Engaging in practical activities* · Actively listening, observing and discussing · Completing online documentation · Accessing apps and websites for further learning opportunities
How will my learning be assessed?
Learners will be submitting work via Moodle (Virtual Learning Platform) wherever possible and also completing learning mats and handouts. The teacher will use a range of activities to review learner’s knowledge throughout the course and identify any gaps and additional information required. · Learners will receive feedback in order to further develop their knowledge. · Learners will assess their knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the learning outcomes. This allows you to identify how much you have learnt and where you might need to do further study or research. · Learners will also be supported to set an individual target for the course based on personal goals and aspirations.
Additional Information
Please arrive for your class at least 10 minutes before the start so you can set up, meet your teacher and other learners. It would be useful to have a pen and paper so you can make notes throughout the course Learners are asked to wear appropriate clothing when participating in the practical floor activities. The college has an Additional Learning Support Team who can support students with a variety of learning needs. If you have a diagnosed additional learning need or feel you may need additional support to successfully complete this course, please speak to your course teacher upon enrolment.
