It is important to note that this course is practical and requires a degree of manual dexterity for you to participate fully and get the most out of each session. This programme is designed beginners in mind and no prior experience is necessary. You will require Level 2 Maths and English skills, the ability to read and follow instructions and participate in group discussions.

Course Overview
This taster session is designed to encourage you to connect with your inner-self and the materials through the catharsis of exploring the potential of different brushes and tools to move and manipulate paint in different ways. You will discover how to free up your style and begin your journey of self-expression through art. You will engage in a range of guided explorations in different media to further your understanding and practice in observing and recording colour for different purposes. You will be facilitated in reflecting on and evaluating outcomes using subject specific terminology and analytical skills. You will participate in group discussions of relevant examples by a range of Artists from different cultures, eras and backgrounds. You will be asked to discuss your individual interests, aspirations and experience within the subject and take part in a range of simple exercises and discussions in order to negotiate individual learning goals. This programme is designed with beginners in mind although some learners may have some previous informal learning experience within the overall curriculum area.
What will I learn?
Course objectives: Build awareness of different brush holding and brush stroke techniques. Build confidence in using a range of different shaped, sized and textured brushes Consider different ways in which to hold, move and vary pressure within brush strokes Develop confidence in moving your brush from different parts of your wrist and arm and evaluate the qualities of resulting marks. Explore mark making on wet and dry surfaces Experiment with manipulating paint with non– traditional tools Consider the expressive potential of resulting marks and movements. Build confidence in evaluating and annotating and discussing outcomes. Identify progression opportunities.
How is the course delivered?
You will learn in a variety of ways:
You will have access to in class demonstrations showing and prompting you in your explorations of different techniques and materials and encouraging you to share your outcomes and discuss your progress with your tutor and peers.
You will have access to handouts – learning materials such as worksheets, samples and examples of relevant artwork
You may be asked to engage in paired activities and complete worksheets to encourage your analytical skills, encourage reflective practice and consolidate your learning.
You will be encouraged to share your work and your reflections during group critiques, so that you can help your peers learn and learn from them too.
You will produce a range of subject relevant outcomes and written evaluations, supported by your tutor.
You may research different artists and techniques further in your own time through sketch pad development and looking for inspiration on line.
How will my learning be assessed?
You will be asked to track you progress against course objectives and personal goals, recording feedback and reflection using a “Learning Mats” .
Assessment of learning will be done using observation of practical tasks and written annotation/evaluation, Q&A, discussion and reflection. You will be asked to as present and share your work and ideas with the group.
You may be asked to reflect on the wider outcomes of the course such as making new friends, increasing your wellbeing through creativity and connecting with your community.
You will also develop your own analytical skills, enabling you to critique your own work and establish ways of moving forward as you move towards independent learning.

Course Facilities
What equipment will I need? Your tutor will come equipped with materials for the session. If you have your own paint brushes and basic drawing materials that you would like to bring with you, please do but this is not essential for taster sessions. An A3, waterproof display folder may be useful. Consider that sometimes your work may still be wet!
