Entry Requirements:
This course is practical and requires a degree of manual dexterity for you to participate fully and get the most out of the session. It is designed with beginners in mind and no prior experience is necessary. Learners need to be able to read, write and follow instructions at Level 3 English.

Course Overview
On this course you can enjoy creative processes that benefit your wellbeing through learning and connecting with others in your community. You will take time out from everyday stresses and enjoy engaging with calm and slow processes. We will explore using fabrics, sewing, paint and pattern for a range of outcomes in a creative exploration of styles, looking at the work of other artists to inspire and guide your project, taking inspiration from collage, illustration, applique and mixed media.
What will I learn?
By the end of the course you will be able to:
Discuss the connections between Wellbeing and creativity and reflect on your experiences. Plan a textiles based design, including create effective colour pallets. Follow simple step by step instructions to practise basic techniques related to the subject Use a range of simple hand sewing techniques to add detail to your project. Explore Painting techniques to tint backgrounds and create mixed media effects to paper and fabric. Look at the work of relevant artists. Develop an understanding of the relevance of annotation in observation and recording Explore mark making techniques with a range of tools including pen, stitch and paint. Build confidence in evaluating and annotating and discussing outcomes. Identify progression opportunities Supportively appraise own and others work. Reflect on the wider outcomes of the course such as making new friends, increasing your wellbeing through creativity and connecting with your community.
How is the course delivered?
You will learn in a variety of ways:
You view demonstrations showing and prompting you in your explorations of different techniques and materials and encouraging you to share your outcomes and discuss your progress with your tutor and peers. You will have access to handouts such as worksheets and prompt lists to encourage your analytical skills, encourage reflective practice and consolidate your learning. You will be encouraged to share your work and your reflections so that you can help your peers learn and learn from them too. You will gain 1:1 feedback, advice and inspiration from your tutor verbally in sessions.
How will my learning be assessed?
You will receive feedback from your tutor and peers on your individual outcomes for each topic within the course.
You will also develop your own analytical skills, enabling you to critique your own work and establish ways of moving forward as you move towards independent learning.
You will track your progress in your course booklet.
Additional Information
You will be working on projects that can easily be extended beyond the guided learning hours. We also encourage personal research before and during the course to offer inspiration and context. Optional extra practice and research will support your progress, you may occasionally be provided with individually relevant reference points and links to extend your learning and support your personal projects. You will be asked to record your progress in an Individual Learning Portfolio, noting goals you would like to achieve and noting what you have learned during each session.

Course Facilities
What equipment will I need? Your tutor will arrive with basic materials for each session although you are welcome, and encouraged to bring your own where possible. You may have some materials already. If you have your own preferred sewing needles or scissors please bring these. You will be asked to bring along scrap fabrics to the second part of the course, so you could be gathering these. Please remember you will need to take all work created home with you after every session. The college has an Additional Learning Support Team who can support students with a variety of learning needs. If you have a diagnosed additional learning need, or feel you may need additional support in order to successfully complete this course, please speak to your course teacher upon enrolment. You will be learning over 4 weekly sessions at 2.5 hours per session, inclusive of tidy up time! Your tutor will be available for feedback and Q&A at designated time slots throughout the duration of your course.
