Entry to the course is dependent on passing a screening assessment which takes place at interview prior to enrolment. No prior qualifications are necessary. The screening assessment is designed to give us an indication of your current literacy levels so that we can identify the best qualification route and class for you. The screening assessment/enrolment process can take up to 1.5 hours.

Course Overview
This course is centred on GCSE English Language – AQA 8700 specification. You will attend 1 x 3 hour lesson per week over 33 weeks. The course starts in September and finishes with 2 x final examinations in May/June. The course is designed to enable you to develop the skills required to read, understand and analyse a wide range of different texts as well as writing clearly, coherently and accurately using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures.
What will I learn?
On this course you will develop your knowledge and skills in reading, writing and speaking and listening. This will include: – identifying explicit and implicit information – explaining, commenting on and analysing a writer’s use of language and structure – evaluating a text critically – comparing writers’ viewpoints and perspectives – descriptive and narrative writing – viewpoint writing – writing with clarity and coherence – using accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar
How is the course delivered?
You will attend 1 x 3 hour lesson per week for the duration of the programme. In addition to this, you will be required to complete weekly independent learning.
How will my learning be assessed?
You will complete regular formative assessments in class to assess your knowledge, skills and understanding as the course progresses. You will receive regular feedback from your teacher to enable you to understand your specific strengths and areas for development, in addition to personalised targets for you to focus on. You will also be required to complete mock exams in the build up to your final summative exams.
There is no formal coursework within this programme. You will be required to complete regular independent learning, in-class assessments and mock examinations. You will have 2 x final summative examinations which take place in May/June. You will also complete a Spoken Language endorsement.

There may be fees for this course if you have previously studied GCSE English and achieved a Grade 4 or C and above.
